I recently found this terrific ink test on a blog that I read.
You can view it here:
http://www.craftcritique.com/

They compare many types of black inks.
Many of you will find this of interest if inks confuse you.
Enjoy!

Copic Coloring Tutorial

Sorry I've been missing in action, this blog has really been neglected.
I found this VERY useful information on the copic blog:

Look at the series of circles below.

See how plain the first one is? It has no definition, since it is just a light color. It is floating there without any reason to be important. This is a perfect way to show sky, water, or something without strongly defined edges, but it doesn't work as a solid shape.

The second is an improvement- it has light and black. See how the light looks a bit more important, but this is still a flat picture. Not very exciting, and it is so pale, our eye doesn't think much of the colored area.

The third circle is better. We now have black, light and middle. Notice though that the black circle still stands out - it is such a heavy contrast from the light that our eye still notices it too much.

Now, look at the last circle. I left white, and added an extra layer of dark. In this circle the black line doesn't seem so heavy, since we have a balance between our color values. By far, this is the most interesting of our circles, and we can see that it is no longer a circle, but a ball.

Applying this to artwork

Let's carry this over to a simple picture.

This Riley Moose was nicely colored, but very flat.

I have two colors represented, black and light brown.

Not very exciting.

Next, here he is with black, light brown, and middle brown. He doesn't look so flat anymore, but he's still not very exciting.

Last, here is Riley with white, light brown, middle brown, dark brown, and black. Now he has life!

See how the base color for his body and antlers is still the same, but you feel that the antlers and hooves are different because they have white, light brown, and shadows of middle brown. His body however has highlights of light, middle brown, and shadows of dark brown. They're the same tone of brown, so they match, but just by changing the contrast range in each area they look like different surfaces.

Look at the final coloring below.

I still felt that there was not enough contrast on Riley, so I added even more number variation- I went with E31, E35, E39. See how he pops off the page ever so much more?

Shiny things

Shiny things have a sharper contrast between light and dark. You can represent this as crisp edges between your white and color, or, in the case of this airplane, I'm not using a light shade, I am only using white, middle, and dark. The highlights are added in as opaque white to be extra crisp, so they look like sunlight reflecting off the shiny airplane body.Remember, if you have a hard time leaving white in your picture, you can always add opaque white to really punch some life into your work.Image: Plane Riley by Hanna Stamps, Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black Paper: Neenah Classic Crest Other: Opaque White, 0.1 multiliner to write the sentiment on Riley's banner

Update from Iraq

I recieved the following email from Olena in Iraq.
If you'd like to send her a care package I've included her address below.

How was the Stamp Show (Akron)? i'm so, so bummed that I missed it.....i can't wait to get my box of goodies. this is the only thing that keeps my spirits up. we have been getting hit alot lately at my camp. plus the weather is getting hot (115 degress the last few days)..it's SO HOT that our generators keep going out, so we have no power at times, which means no electricity or water to shower...it really, really sucks......it's going to get hotter too.....this place is not good at all...we are actually having a water shortage as well, due to the enemy not keeping up up on their end of the deal. we are all very, very stressed about things here.
Well, give me some GOOD news from home...i miss everyone. please tell all the ladies, i'm doing OK and i miss them all. Please keep all the Troops in oyur prayers :-)
Hugs,Olena

Adopt a Solider

Several customers had a terrific idea in regards to sending stamping items to Olena Ferguson. Olena is stationed in Iraq. She requested that we adopt a solider, I thought it would be nice if we would adopt her.
Olena's requests were simple. Stamping stuff, and air freshners.
I'm sure she wouldn't mind some girly stuff too! Chapstick, hand cream, body lotion etc.

We'll have a box at the shop where you can drop in anything you'd like to send Olena, and a donation towards the shipping.
For example, Marlene Phillips was in last week, she bought a clear alphabet stamp and acrylic blocks for Olena, and donated $2 towards the shipping of the box. You can donate your handmade cards for the troops as well, and Olena will distribute them to the soliders in her troop.

Thanks for the great idea Patti, Jane, Marlene and Pat.

By the way 2 of our stampers, Pat and Jan have already sent Olena items on their own. Very thoughtful!

Here is Olena's address in case you'd like to drop her a card:

Another Great Clip It Up idea

Great Way to organize your embellishments and clear stamp sets!

Clip It Up Display, shared by Elizabeth Sloman
A great do it yourself display using everyday items! Fun, and inexpensive!!
STEPS TO MAKE A MOCK “CLIP IT UP” PRODUCT
Base of Rack - Step 1
For the base of the rack you will need to purchase a terra cotta saucer for a flower pot.
The one I used I bought at Home Depot. It's 14.5" in diameter. It does not come with a hole in the center.
You could use any plant saucer- even a pretty ceramic one. Just remember that it has to be broad enough and heavy enough to support the rest of the rack. Also, it's best if you add the hole which I will explain later- so that it is the exact size of the rod you will be inserting.
Step 2
The next step is to prepare the base.
You will first need to find the center of the rack and drill your hole. This is the most difficult step of the entire process!
I purchased a drill bit made for ceramic and tile at Home Depot for this step.
The hole should be just large enough for the rod to go into it.
After the hole was drilled. I took the base outside and spray painted it with a metallic spray paint to coordinate with my scrapping room.
Step 3
While your base is drying it's time to move on to the next step.
The actual spinning racks I used are the frames from the insides of two lamp shades. I purchased one of the shades at a thrift store for .50 cents and the other was one I had at home that I no longer needed.
Remove the frame from the lamp shade.
Step 4
When looking for lampshade be sure they are the type of lampshade that attaches to the lamp by screwing on a finial as opposed to the type that is held into place by the lightbulb itself.
The larger frame I used is 11 and a half inches in diameter and the smaller is 7 inches.
When choosing sizes remember that the largest needs to be smaller than the base for stability and that when you hang your items onto it that half of the item will extend beyond the outside of the rack and that half will be on the inside.
Step 5
Once removed your frames will look like this.
To remove the excess glue and paper or fabric from the frame- I first soaked mine in warm water and then lightly sanded with sand paper to remove any residue.
Next I took the racks outside and spray painted them with a brown metallic paint to coordinate with my Scrapping Space.
Step 6
In the lighting department at Home Depot you will need to purchase the following:
(Not Shown) a 30" threaded rod for making lamps. It will be found packaged in the lighting department in a package that looks like the packages shown.
You will also need the finial of your choice and 2 packages of the lock nuts shown.
Also needed are 2 large - 2" washers with the right size center hole that will fit on the rod. These washers are very important as they will prevent the terra cotta saucer from cracking.
In the red writing at the bottom of the packages you will find the dimensions- be sure that your finial and Lock nuts are the same size as your rod.
Step 7 - Rack Assembly
Insert the rod into the hole in the terra cotta saucer. Your saucer should be upside down as shown in the picture.
Be sure there isn't so much of the rod on the underside that it is longer than the saucer is deep as this will prevent it from sitting nicely.
On to your rod on the underside of the saucer you will first need to put on one of the Large 2" washers.
Then screw into place a Nut to hold it firmly in place.
You should now be able to sit your rack upright.
Place the other large 2" washer onto the rod so that it is sitting on the top of your saucer . Screw on to the rod a nut so that it is sitting on top of the washer and tighten.
Next- with a ruler measure 14" up the rod and mark with a marker. Screw a nut onto the rod to this mark. Place a lock nut on top of the nut and screw another nut into place. Tighten. Spray a little PAM cooking spray or some WD-40 on to the top nut.
Next set your large Lampshade from on top of your nut-lock nut- nut combination.
On top of the large lamp shade add a little more Cooking Spray or WD-40 and repeat with another nut- lock nut- nut combination.
You've now installed your first spinning rack. Give it a spin
Next measure from the top of the last night up your rod 12". Repeat the steps for installing the large spinning rack.
Top with a finial of your choice.
Hanging your items. Most things come prepackaged with a hole for hanging built in. I used safety pins to attach everything.

Custom Stamps *Coming Soon*

Coming soon to Rubber Stamp Studio!
A terrific line of custom stamps and multicolor ink pads. Lots of great designs to chose from. I'll have a hard time chosing just one! These would make a terrific gift also. I've got a Bridal Shower coming up. I think I'll have a stamp made for the bride and groom.
These are the designs you'll be able to choose from:
I can't wait for the display to arrive.
Hopefully in time to preview at Stamp Camp.

Adopt a Solider!

We have our very own solider to adopt.
Olena Ferguson, Rubber Stamp Studio customer, has been deployed to Iraq.
I know that many of you send cards for the troops.
Here's a direct line to someone we know!

This is the email I received from Olena:
Hi Rochelle, thank you for the response....i don't need too much right now. like always i would love some card-making supplies......the voltage is different here, so nothing that i need to plug in and it's sandy, eventhough i have indoor quarters. so if you can think of supplies that are basic, but will still make nice cards, then that would be great. i'll be making cards for Troops so they can send them to their families. the peel off stickers and markers to color them is something simple that i could think of. also cardstock, and simple stamps for the basic occasions. i left everything at home, due to packing constraints. i'm sure you and the other ladies will figure out what will be sufficient. just remember to send me examples so the cards I make look nice, LOL
That would be so nice to adopt me, cuz then i can make submissions here to Stars and Stripes newspaper regarding your effort in the war...i also want to submit an article(s) to the US craft magazines showing your support as well......i can take some pics of Soldiers with the stuff you send them...you'll be famous and get lots of business too :-). It is smelly(PHEW) here, cuz my compund is located on the water that Sadaam constructed here, and it smells like constant sewer water...i can't have candles, but i can always use any other types of air fresheners (not the kind that you plug in though, only the kind that you can put on a table).....any card craft mags will be cool too....i'm sorry i'm being so picky, i just don't want you to waste your time or money. i am so sad that i will miss this year's April show in Akron:-( I went last year and had a terrific time...you'll have to let me know all about it. if you can take a picture and send one to me of the ladies and the store, i'd like to use that in the magazine (printed over here)...they really like to see supportive stuff coming from the states.
well, nothing new here...we didn't get mortared today, so it's been very quiet...never know what 2morrow will being though.....tell everyone hello and will see you towards the end of this year....hugs, olena

I'd really like to support Olena, and hope that we can send her loads of great stuff to help her time away from home go more quickly.
Here's her address if you'd like to send her cards, supplies or anything else.

Product Review: Copic Spica Markers

Copic Atyou Spica Markers
Quick Facts:
They come in 13 different colors (seen above)
Micro Glass Flakes make the sparkle
Water based pigment ink
Acid free
They are to be stored flat
Unlike Copic Original markers, these are NOT refillable

They color beautifully - you just have to be sure not to go over a certain area too much or it will go right through the paper as the ink flows quite nicely.
You can build up the glitter so you need to color with the same pressure and evenly over an area or it will collect and "congeal". If this happens you can wipe away the extra glitter bits quickly before it dries.
These differ from a Stardust Gel Pen! Stardust is a gel pen, these a waterbased markers. If find these to have more color than the stardust.
The particles of glass are so fine that they lay flat. They dry almost instantly too. You know how sometimes you want sparkle in a tiny area only but Stickles Glitter glue is too chunky? Spica's have a very fine point and are perfect for small areas.
Available at Rubber Stamp Studio.

Thomas Kinkaid Creations

These gorgeous creations came from a fellow blogger, Sharon Harnist.

You can view her entire blog at: http://paperfections.typepad.com/paperfections/
I Really love the black and white card. Simple but elegant.
And the journal has very little coloring as well. I think many stampers are intimidated by the Thomas Kinkade stamps, thinking that they will require hours of coloring. But look how gorgeous these two creations are.
Thanks for sharing Sharon!

New Product Review

Many of you have asked about the Craft Cutter Light Paper Trimmer,
I came across this review on CiaB's Crafty Times Blog, thought you'd like to know what she thought of it.

You may have seen the Craft cutter lite advertised on TV - I certainly did and I bought it - and I'm not too happy with it. It doesn't cut clear through paper or standard card stock - you often have to pull it apart, and while that usually works well, from time to time it sticks and you end up with an uneven or ripped edge - I contacted their customer service and told them what was happening, it's like the blades are not sharp- the first person I was in contact with asked if Iwanted a refund or to have a new unit shipped.I really like the idea of being able to make a lot of different edges, and I can't cut with scissors worth a darn, so I responded via another email that I'd like to have a new unit sent. A different person writes back, Why, what's wrong with the one you have -so I started all over again, and now, 4 weeks later, I still don't have a replacement unit and no one is responding to my emails!

Baby It's Cold Outside!

It's cold!
I've got a great recipe to warm you up!
I served this at stamp club last month.

Vegetable Creamy Cheese Soup
6c water
6 chicken boullion cubes
1- 1# bag of frozen mixed vegetables
1-1# bag of broccoli florettes
1 Med. onion chopped
1-1# bag of frozen hashbrown potatoes
Simmer 1 hour.
Add 2 cans Cream of Chicken soup
2c. milk
1# velveeta cheese (cut into cubes)
cook until cheese melts.
